SALT LAMPS

What is a Salt Lamp?

A Himalayan Salt Lamp is created from mined salt that has been hollowed out to allow room for a lightbulb. The light glows through the medium of the salt crystal, which can range in colour from a dark salmon pink to a pale orange. Salt lamps make attractive accent lights. Their main attraction, however, is that the heating of the salt reportedly causes the crystal to release negative ions (often called simply 'ions').

Negative ions have long been considered healthy; the sea air, mountain air and the air around swiftly running water is high in negative ions. Indoor air, recirculated air, and air around electronic equipment is very low in negative ions. Many office workers who suffer health complaints around fluorescent lighting and computer monitors report considerably less fatigue and headaches if the concentration of negative ions in the air is increased.

What are the benefits?

Many people believe in the health benefits of Salt Lamps. Salt Rock Crystal is known for its ability to ionise the air. Negative ions are essential to our health and wellbeing. Highly polluted areas often have a low negative ion balance, which leads to a feeling of reduced health and well-being.

How they work

It has been shown that negative ions in the air bind with airborne pollutants, making them heavier so that they fall to the ground, and therefore are unavailable to be inhaled. Many modern air purifiers - the so-called 'ionic air cleaners' - use this technique to provide cleaner indoor air for allergy sufferers. Some studies seem to indicate that an increase in negative ions in the air increases blood flow to the brain, which would have the effect of improved concentration.

Care Tips

Never wash your Himalayan Salt Lamp as its natural effect is one of self cleansing. With its antibiotic properties it does not need washing. If it gets dusty, just use a dry or slightly damp cloth to clean it.

We do recommend leaving your lamp on as much as possible however when not using for long periods, do not leave your lamp in a humid room or outside of the home where it is exposed to the elements. Try not to keep your lamp on a window sill or in a bathroom (or anywhere with large amounts of moisture present).

We recommend placing your Himalayan Salt Lamp onto a decorative plate or holder, to avoid it leaving marks on any much-loved furniture.

Setup of your Himalayan Salt Lamp

Once you receive your lamp, screw the light globe into the power cable fitting. Gently push in the metal clips and insert the globe and fitting into the base of the Salt Lamp until the metal clips spring into place. Simply plug in to your wall outlet, ensuring the power point switch is placed in the off position. Turn on the power and your lamp should be ready to go.

How to look after your Himalayan Salt Lamp

1.To clean, switch lamp off and wipe with a slightly damp sponge

2.Leave lamp on wherever possible as the heat from the light bulb will prevent the lamp absorbing moisture

3.If lamp gets wet leave in strong sunlight for 4 to 5 hours and brush off any excess crystals

4.When not in use for long periods, disconnect your power cable and remove from the lamp, and store the salt lamp and base in a plastic bag to help prevent the lamp absorbing moisture

5.In humid conditions we recommend placing your lamp onto a small tray or dish in the rare case they may pool water

Planning on going away on holiday?

If you plan on having your lamp switched off for an extended period, we recommend unplugging the power cord, separating the cord from your salt lamp, and wrapping the salt lamp in a plastic bag to keep it air tight. This will prevent the lamp from pooling water.

My lamp has started pooling water, or "leaking"

If your lamp is running, leaking or pooling water this is generally due to being switched off for extended periods, especially in areas of high humidity. To remedy, leave in strong sunlight for 4 to 5 hours and brush off any excess crystals. Wipe gently with an old cloth and turn the lamp back on.

~ Enjoy ~
